Is a Sunday roast worth it?
should it be exclusive to home or is it better eaten outside?
Since coming to the UK, the idea of a Sunday Roast has always fascinated me. It’s essentially an enormous meal reminiscent of American Thanksgiving but it takes place every Sunday. That is unbelievable to me that a large part of the country partakes in this tradition as soon as the weather gets a bit chilly and the evenings get longer.
I’ve had two Sunday roasts in my time here and both times I’ve left it feeling really underwhelmed for some reason. In theory, it should be the perfect meal. After all, Thanksgiving dinner has to be one of my favorite meals and plates of food in the WORLD. A Sunday roast on paper sounds like the best thing on earth. Roasted meat??? Roast potatoes??? GRAVY???? I mean you can’t really go wrong. But. But. I’m starting to catch the vibe that it’s just not worth having a Sunday roast out at a restaurant. Or maybe I just haven’t gone to good places. It’s been expensive, loud, chaotic, and kind of mid-food. Like everything is good but nothing more, you know? The food is kind of underseasoned, the Yorkshire pudding is massive but ultimately a little tasteless and the general ambiance is a little stressful.
I really really want to have a good Sunday roast experience so if any of you have any suggestions for one in London, I’m all ears. I actually think I’d prefer one at home if I’m being completely honest. My flatmate made one for me once and it BANGED. It was also so much cheaper and just yummier. Side note, cauliflower cheese? My mind is blown, 10/10, I’ll give you that one brits.
This was my last Sunday roast and while it looks impressive, I just ultimately was not. Impressed that is. Perhaps one day I’ll find the roast for me.
